Irkut to produce 1000 MC-21 planes in the next 20 years
Russian aircraft manufacturer Irkut Corporation is planning to produce 1000 MC-21 planes in the next 20 years. Vice-President of Irkut Corporation for marketing and external relations Kirill Budaev confirmed the news at the aviation forum “Wings of the Future” on November 1, 2017, Rambler News Service informs.
According to Budaev, production of the new aircraft depends on the trends in aviation. “There’s a completely clear trend that passenger capacity is increasing over the next 20 years,” said Budaev. “But it is difficult to predict where the trend will be – it may change, or it may not.”
But foreign aircraft manufacturers are ready to compete with Russian aircraft providers on the Russian market as well. For instance, the intention to make this a reality was expressed by President of Boeing Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Sergey Kravchenko at the forum.
“We have always said that competition with Airbus and Lockheed Martin, and the growing ambitions of China, and the lovely planes, some of which we helped Russia to create is a reality and we are ready for this, ” said Kravchenko.
Russian airplane manufacturers produce around 30 planes a year, 25 times less than Airbus and Boeing, Forbes informs. In August 2017, Russian Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Rogozin in an interview for TV channel Russia said that country’s air transportation system is wholly dependent on foreign aircraft, noting that domestic carriers spend around $7.8 billion on those planes. According to the Minister, in order to support Russian market of civil aircraft, Russia has done a lot by creating the domestic MS-21 and Sukhoi Superjet 100.
On October 26, 2017, the Aeroflot Group approved a lease deal for three new Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft between Aeroflot, VEB-Leasing and Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCA), RNS informs. The aircraft must be delivered to Aeroflot in October-November 2017. In total, the Aeroflot Group is planning to increase the fleet by 44 aircraft in 2018 and bring the total fleet of the group to almost 350 aircraft.
