British Airways worker dies after vehicle collision at Heathrow
On February 14, 2018, at least 20 British Airways flights were delayed after two vehicles collided on the taxiway at London Heathrow Airport (United Kingdom). Two British Airways employees were involved in the accident, one of whom has died on a way to the hospital.
The accident occurred at approximately 6 am on an airport taxiway. At least 20 British Airways flights were interrupted and delayed after the crash, despite the fact that airfield remained open. Most of the delays occurred from the terminal 5.
The crash involved two service vehicles and two male members of the staff. A British Airways engineer in his 40s dies after a cardiac arrest on a way to the hospital. Another man is believed to have sustained a broken shoulder and his injuries are not life-threatening, a Scotland Yard spokesperson told local media.
The accident was confirmed in an announcement by the airport. “Following a serious accident involving two vehicles on our airfield, a British Airways colleague has passed away” is noted in a statement issued by Heathrow. “Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends affected by this accident. We will be fully cooperating with the Police in the investigation which will follow”.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and are offering our full care and support to his family and colleagues,” a British Airways spokesperson said according to the BBC. “We have apologized to customers for the delay to a small number of our flights this morning, following an incident involving two operational vehicles at the airport. We are doing all we can to ensure they will be able to depart as soon as possible.”
