Munich Airport handled 21.7 million passengers throughout the first six months of 2018, signifying a rise of approximately 3%. The general number of take-offs and landings, however, has grown insignificantly if to compare it with the first half of 2017, reaching around 200,000. Uncommonly high number of flight cancellations, happening mostly due to thunderstorms halted the growth process and led to 2,600 more cancelled flights than during the first half of 2017. The total air freight tonnage, at approximately 173,000 tonnes, fell down by 3% from the year-earlier.

International traffic remained the main growth driver at Munich Airport. On routes within Europe, traffic increased by 4.6% with around 600,000 passengers, while on intercontinental routes the passenger total was about 5% higher than the same time in 2017.  A major driver behind this long-haul traffic growth was Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) , which substantially increased its capacity in this segment. Since the start of the summer timetable period, Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) has had five of its 14 Airbus A380 widebody jets stationed in Munich.

The long haul segment boom is likely to continue in the second half of 2018. Munich airport CEO Michael Kerkloh announced that the Colombian airline Avianca (AVHOQ) is to offer five weekly departures from Munich to Bogota starting November 17, 2018, calling the airline “the most important newcomer”. At its home hub Avianca (AVHOQ) offers an extensive network of connections, including 20 destinations in Columbia and 60 cities in Latin America. LATAM, largest South America’s airline, is another important player to launch a non-stop connection to South America, starting H1 2019. The company plans to operate scheduled flights from Munich to the Brazilian metropolis of Sao Paulo.
