Wizz Air announces 10th base of 2020 in Catania, Italy
The trend of Wizz Air going against the grain and continuing its aggressive expansion throughout Europe is not done yet, as the low-cost carrier announces a new base in Catania, Italy.
The new base will welcome two Airbus A321 aircraft, including five new routes from Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) towards Bologna, Roma, and Venice in Italy, Memmingen Airport (FMM) in Germany, and London Luton Airport (LTN) in the United Kingdom. The new base will begin operating in October 2020, according to local media reports.
"I am delighted to announce our 36th base in Catania Fontanarossa Airport which will allow the launch of five new routes for a total of 20 routes from Catania,” commented chief commercial officer (CCO) of the airline George Michalopoulos.
Wizz Air has been very active over the past few months, as it announced several new bases throughout Europe in the second half of 2020. They are located in such airports as Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), Dortmund Airport (DTM), Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport (LWO), London Gatwick Airport (LGW), Milan-Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Pulkovo Airport (LED) in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
In addition, despite the current pandemic, the company is going ahead with the launch of its Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates-based subsidiary, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, which is set to start operations also in October 2020. The Abu Dhabi offspring recently welcomed its first Airbus A321neo (registered A6-WZB).
