Aviadvigatel PD-14, a new Russian turbofan engine slated to power the MC-21 airliner, was found compliant with ICAO emission standards.

According to a press release by its manufacturer United Engine Corporation (ODK), the airplane equipped with such engines will be allowed to perform international flights. 

The engine performs in accordance with the latest emission standards laid out by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in January 2020. The compatibility was experimentally tested by specialists from Zurich University of Applied Sciences.

According to the manufacturer, PD-14 is future-proofed and will perform in accordance with even newer, stricter emission standards that ICAO is going to put in place in 2023.

PD-14 is a high-bypass turbofan engine developed on the base of the PS-90 which has powered the majority of Russian civilian airliners since the early 90s. The development of the new engine started in 2010.

According to Russian minister of industry and trade Denis Manturov, of the initial batch of 630 MC-21s half are going to be powered by PD-14s, while the other half will sport Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engines.
