Eurowings to open new base in Berlin
A German low-cost carrier Eurowings has scheduled the date for the new base launch in Berlin, Germany. The airline has disclosed plans regarding commercial services from the hub in the summer season of 2021.
On March 9, 2021, Eurowings announced the plans to open its new base at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) on April 1, 2021. The subsidiary of Lufthansa Group decided to base 3 of its Airbus A320 jets at the new hub and counted that the move would create up to 100 direct jobs for Berlin. The low-cost carrier has a total of 50 Airbus A320 aircraft, only 6 of them currently active in operations.
While announcing the launch date of the BER base, Jens Bischof, the CEO of Eurowings, said the airline was looking to strengthen its position in the capital of the country. The air carrier also seeks to react to the withdrawal of international competitors who have largely left the German market in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
"Berlin is and will remain an absolute tourist magnet and one of the most exciting metropolises in Europe, both culturally and historically. So, it's only logical that we expand our presence in the capital by opening our own base," said Bischof.
"Others are leaving, we are staying here," he added.
With the opening of the new base Eurowings plans to offer regular commercial services connecting the capital of the country with Cologne, Dusseldorf, and Stuttgart with a frequency of up to three flights per day. Besides, the airline plans to start commercial operations to Beirut, Lebanon in the summer season of 2021 in addition to Mallorca, the Canary Islands, Greece, Austria, Corsica, Croatia, and Egypt destinations.
According to the Eurowings announcement, since the BER airport opening in October 2020, the airline has already taken off from Berlin more than 1,000 times.
