ANA Boeing 777 suffers in-flight engine shut down, diverts to Vancouver
An All Nippon Airways (ANA) Boeing 777 was forced to divert to Vancouver, Canada, after suffering an in-flight engine shutdown while performing an international flight from Tokyo, Japan, to Los Angeles, US.
The incident occurred on March 27, 2021, when ANA Boeing 777-300, registered as JA788A, was performing a regular scheduled flight NH-106 from Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
The aircraft took off from HND airport at 11:04 p.m. (UTC) and supposed to reach the final destination at LAX airport but while flying over the Pacific Ocean at FL350, the flight crew noticed a loss of oil pressure in the left-hand jet‘s engine GE90. The pilots immediately shut the engine, then drifted the jet down to FL240 and decided to divert to the nearest airport in Vancouver.
About two hours after leaving FL350, the ANA Boeing 777 jet safely landed on runway 26R at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). The local emergency services inspected the jet and the aircraft taxied to the apron with no further incidents reported.
According to Avherald.com data, it was the second incident in 2021, involving ANA‘s aircraft. Previously, in January 2021, the airline‘s Boeing 777-300, registered as JA787A, had a left-hand engine GE90 issue when the abnormal engine vibrations were noticed while en route from Chicago, the US to Tokyo Japan.
In 2020, ANA recorded three incidents, including deflated tire issue, the engine panel drop on departure, as well as an incident during the turbulent weather causing injuries to a cabin crew member.
