On May 6, 2021, AirAsia announced its preliminary operating statistics for the first quarter of 2021, with improved operating results in March 2021. 

With the acceleration of the global vaccine program, AirAsia saw operating improvements for all its entities. On a month-to-month basis, key operational parameters progressed positively in March 2021, as compared to February 2021.

AirAsia Malaysia saw an increase in passenger traffic by 84%, while AirAsia Philippines saw a growth by 57%. In March 2021, AirAsia Indonesia posted 24% growth of passenger traffic, while AirAsia Thailand “doubled the amount of handled passengers” as compared to February 2021.

“AirAsia expects to see solid domestic demand in its key Asean markets in the next few quarters as the majority of the population receives their vaccinations and due to strong pent up demand,” read the statement. 

During the first quarter of 2021, due to the lower travel demand caused by the new COVID-19 wave in Thailand, AirAsia Thailand saw the biggest discomfort, as the operating results among other AirAsia entities were the lowest. AirAsia Thailand posted a 65% quarter on quarter decline in passengers.

AirAsia Philippines leveraged a strong rebound in travel demand during Q1 2021, carrying 168,527 passengers and a 43% increase compared to Q4 2020. AirAsia Indonesia during the first quarter of 2021 gained a 29% increase in passengers. The increase in passenger numbers was possible due to the vaccination process and further easing of restrictions. 

Furthermore, AirAsia Malaysia posted a load factor of 73% in Q1 2021, 1% higher than in Q4 2020. According to AirAsia Malaysia, “the ongoing inoculation drive in Malaysia will lead to a stronger and sustainable recovery this year”.
