Air China Flight Diverted As Mentally Ill Man Holds Flight Attendant Hostage

A terrible accident almost did not turn into a deadly tragedy this week during Air China flight. One of the passengers took flight attendant hostage and threatened her with a fountain pen.

The flight took off at 8.40am from Changsha, the city in Hunan province and was scheduled to fly to Beijing.

Civil Aviation of China has made an announcement on their website regarding the incident. However, they did not tend to go into details and commented it very shortly. The report said, "the matter was successfully handled".

The incident for the most of the passengers remained a mystery. Majority of them did not even see the scene. They just remember being awoken by a scream from the front of the plane. One of the travelers says 'I think someone uttered a cry, which woke us. Everyone was sleeping... it was a woman's cry. Nobody knew what was going on.' However, passengers did not see much because the action was happening somewhere between the first and the business class, therefore, it was covered by the curtains.

There were a couple of pictures taken by passengers flying around the social media. The suspect has been identified by only his surname, Xu. He is 41 years old from Anhua. Xu reportedly has a  history of mental illness and during the flight he experienced a sudden psychological disorder.

Pilots had to make an unscheduled landing at Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport.  Air China‘s representative says this landing was made due to “public safety reasons” and did not expand on the details. China‘s civil aviation authority and police took over situation after landing. They are proceeding with the investigation.

Police and ambulance cars and armed personnel were already waiting on the tarmac for the plane. Police officers arrested the suspect and medical staff took care of flight attendant‘s and passengers‘ psychological health.
