Nepal Plane Crash: What Happened To The Pilot?

Nepal's investigators are now more busy than ever. On August 27th a plane crashed in Kathmandu that killed 51 passenger. But the biggest mystery is what happened to the pilot and why he acted so unprofessional?

The flight UBG 211 was routed from Dhaka, Bangladesh to Kathmandu. But the aircraft did not reach the destination and crashed into a football field near Kathmandu's Tribhuvan Airport.

The passengers

Bombardier Q400 aircraft carried 71 passengers including four crew members. There were 33 Nepali passengers, 32 passengers from Bangladesh and few from China and Maldives. After the crash only several were rescued from the wreckage of the aircraft.

Another passenger, Basanta Bohora, said to The Kathmandu Post that "I was seated near the window and was able to break out of the window. I have no recollection after I got out of the plane. I have received injuries to my head and legs but I am fortunate that I survived the ordeal."

The flight

During the flight everything looked stable. But few moments before reaching the destination the aircraft crashed.

General manager of the airport, Raj Kumar Chettri, have said that the permission to land was already granted. Then the pilot informed about changing the route. And there was no reason why.

After some moments the plane started to act weirdly and the pilot was asked again if everything is under control. They started a discussion but the pilot vanished.

Few moments later the dark smokes appeared and the aircraft was laying on the ground of the football field.

What about the pilot?

As investigators found out, the pilot, Abid Sultan, was smoking heavily during the flight from Dhaka to Kathmandu. In the report it is said that "When we analysed the conversation on the Cockpit Voice Recorder, it was clear to us that the captain was harbouring severe mental stress. He also seemed to be fatigued and tired due to lack of sleep."

It is also mentioned in the report that A. Sultan was making abusive statements to his female colleague who was questioning  his career reputation.

Country saw many accidents involving aircraft that happened in recent years. But this accident had the most casualties and damage than any other accident since 1992 when 167 passengers were killed.

But it is important to know and to understand the reasons of the crew and the stress they can feel. Many peoples lives depend on the buttons the pilot press.
