Sun Express and its German subsidiary Sun Express Deutschland have filled the ranks of the many Boeing 737 MAX customers. In 2019, Sun Express will add five new 737 MAX 8s to its fleet, at which point Sun Express Deutschland will also take delivery of its first 737 MAX 8. The cherry on the top? New farther destinations that will be made possible with the new Boeing model.

When Sun Express launches the first five B737 MAX 8 jets into its fleet in 2019, at least two of them will be operated by its German subsidiary, the company’s sales director Peter Glade told German news portal

With the new model, which has a greater range than the previous medium-haul jetliners, Sun Express will be able to launch new destinations in the summer of 2019. The airline says it is currently coordinating with tour operators and considering new destination in West Africa as well as Dubai (UAE).

As for its German subsidiary, Sun Express Deutschland, with the new aircraft the carrier will be able to reach new mid-range destinations such as the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean as well as Egypt from the airline’s base in Germany.

And in case the small order of the Boeing jets seems minor news – according to Boeing’s order book, in 2014, Sun Express ordered 32 new 737 MAXs which are to be delivered by 2024. How many of the existing 64 Boeing 737-800 will be phased out is not yet clear. By the way, Sun Express also operates 6 Airbus A330s. But the airline’s aircraft preference seems to be clear.

You probably have not heard (much) about these airlines, so let us take a final look at the parent and the subsidiary. Founded in 2011, SunExpress Deutschland is a German leisure carrier headquartered at the Frankfurt Rhein-Main International Airport (FRA).

It is a subsidiary of SunExpress, which itself is a joint-venture between two industry leading airlines Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) , established in back in 1989. SunExpress is based in Turkey at the Antalya Airport (AYT) and at the Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB), its second most important hub. The carrier’s main focus is traffic between the home markets of Turkey and Germany.
