Seven fire trucks and several dozen firefighters hastened to extinguish the fire that broke out in the international terminal of Blagoveshchensk Ignatyevo Airport (BQS), Russia.

The incident occurred at BQS airport in the early hours of December 17, 2020. According to the initial report made by the Ministry of Transport, a firefighting service of the airport was informed about the fire at the airport’s terminal at 8:30 a.m (GTM +9). When the rescue team, consisting of 26 firefighters and 7 fire trucks, arrived at the scene of the incident, the flames had already damaged walls and the roof of the building.

„We have received information about a fire at the building of the international sector of the airport […] There were no reports about injured people; the airport is operating normally. No flights have been delayed,” the Ministry of Transport said in a statement.

BQS airport has already caught on fire once and suffered serious damage to the building in 2016. At the time, the major fire broke out after a burning cigarette ignited in a trash bin inside the terminal.

After the fire was extinguished, the Ministry of Emergencies reported that it took an hour to complete the rescue operation in the airport area reaching 1,200 square meters.  The incident had no impact on flight operations, causing no delays or cancellations, as the terminal was closed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in early spring 2020. However, the Russian authority could not specify the main cause of the incident at the closed terminal building.
