New name, new look. The airport previously known as Missoula International Airport officially has a new name: Missoula Montana Airport (MSO). 

The rebranding, including a new logo, coincides with the unveiling of the airport’s new passenger terminal, which is set to open early in 2022. 

“The general thought, with the new building coming along, is that it was a good time to reevaluate not only the logo, but the name of the airport as we look to a new facility. It seemed  like a natural point to do that,” Tim Damrow, director of projects at the airport, told Missoula Current. 

The decision to drop the “international” designation to the airport name has made it more accurate in reflecting the airport’s current operations.

“The international designation is something a lot of airports did in the 70’s and 80’s as more of a status symbol. It seems to be at the point now where it has watered down the meaning of it. The name change is more reflective of what the new airport is and who we serve,” Damrow said. 

And while Missoula Montana Airport currently offers non-stop flights to 16 U.S. destinations and can connect local passengers to an international connection, the airport doesn’t currently offer direct flights to and from an international destination. 

Known as the “Garden City” for its dense trees and lush landscape, Missoula is located at the western edge of Montana and is considered the cultural center of the state.
