US air carrier Delta Air Lines has entered negotiations with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus to potentially expand its existing order for 95 A220 narrow-body passenger planes.
Speaking to Reuters on July 13, 2022, industry sources revealed that the Atlanta-based airline is in talks to purchase 12 aircraft in addition to its existing order for 95 Airbus A220s. The carrier has already received around 56 of these aircraft.
The sources also suggested that the additional order, which would increase the carrier’s A220 fleet to 107 jets, could be announced during Farnborough Airshow 2022. The event is due to take place in the United Kingdom between July 18 and July 22.
During the event, Delta could also finalize its deal with American plane maker Boeing for an order of up to 100 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, the sources also told Reuters.
According to Planespotters.com data, Delta Air Lines currently operates a fleet of 878 planes with an average aircraft age of 14.7 years. The mixed fleet is composed of 493 Boeing and 385 Airbus jets, including 45 Boeing 767-300s, 21 Boeing 767-400s, 111 Boeing 757-200s, 16 Boeing 757-300s, 77 Boeing 737-800s, 159 Boeing 737-900ERs, and 64 Boeing 717-200s (all of them grounded) as well as 24 Airbus A350-900s, 11 A330-200s, 31 A330-300s, 15 A330-900s, 127 A321-200s, three A321neos, 61 A320-200s, 57 A319-100s, as well as 45 A220-100s and 11 A220-300s.
