An Akasa Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 struck its tail on the runway during a go-around at Kolkata Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) on October 31, 2026. The aircraft climbed away, returned for another approach, and landed safely. No injuries were reported.
The incident involved flight QP1925 from Ahmedabad (AMD) to Kolkata, operated by a Boeing 737-8 MAX registered VT-YAG. The aircraft was approaching runway 19L at around 7.37 am local time (2.07 am UTC) when the flight crew initiated a go-around. Its tail made contact with the runway during the manoeuvre.
The aircraft climbed to approximately 3,000 feet before joining the circuit for another approach. It landed around 20 minutes after the go-around.
Akasa Air confirmed that the crew had discontinued the first approach and landed safely on the second attempt. The tail strike was discovered during a post-flight inspection.
Aircraft grounded following the incident
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 remained at Kolkata airport for a detailed inspection. Akasa Air said it had notified the relevant authorities and that the incident was under investigation. The airline has not disclosed the extent of the damage or provided a timeline for the aircraft’s return to service.
The aircraft, VT-YAG, carries manufacturer’s serial number 43924 and line number 7665. It was built in 2019, first flew on August 5 of that year, and was delivered to Akasa Air in November 2022. It was therefore just over seven years old when the incident occurred.
The aircraft is powered by two CFM International LEAP-1B engines. It had originally been intended for South Korea’s Eastar Jet, but was not taken up by the airline before being delivered to Akasa Air.
