American Airlines has unveiled seven new international routes for the 2027 summer season.
The announcement, made on August 27, 2026, followed some teasing social media posts made by the airline, enticing followers to guess the new destinations through clues hidden in text and images.
The US carrier will add two new European destinations to its network: Porto (OPO) and Vienna (VIE), with both nonstop links being operated from the airline hub in Philadelphia (PHL).
American Airlines will also become the only US carrier to serve the Austrian capital. During a recent exclusive Executive Spotlight interview with AeroTime, the CEO of Vienna Airport, Julian Jäger, explained that attracting at least one US carrier was a route development priority.
Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport (KEF)will also be added to American’s network, although case it is more of a comeback in this case since the US airline had previously served this destination but dropped it in 2019.
Both Porto and Vienna will be served by American Airlines’ new Airbus A321XLR, while Keflavik will be operated by a regular A321neo, since this model in its standard version has enough range to reach Iceland from the East coast of the United States.
The Porto service will start on March 28, 2027, while Vienna and Keflavik will begin on May 6 and 28, 2027, respectively.
American Airlines is also leveraging the arrival of the A321XLR to its fleet, which will be deployed on new routes linking New York (JFK) to Amsterdam-Schiphol (AMS) and Nice-Côte d’Azur (NCE).
As was widely anticipated, US carriers are using their A321XLRs to open up new markets across the Atlantic. The day before American’s announcement, competitor United Airlines also announced a raft of new routes to niche destinations in Europe, including Ibiza (IBZ) and Valencia (VLC), which will also be served by this aircraft type.
Barcelona (BCN) will also see a new nonstop service to the United States, since, starting May 27, 2027, American Airlines plans to operate a Boeing 777-200 daily between the two cities.
Another route addition will be Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Tokyo-Narita (NRT), which will be operated daily with a Boeing 787-9 aircraft from March 19, 2027.
American Airlines is also adding a fourth daily frequency between New York (JFK) and London-Heathrow (LHR), which will be operated by B787-9 aircraft equipped with the carrier’s new Flagship Suite business class cabin.
The airline also confirmed that it will bring back existing seasonal routes, Charlotte to Paris (CDG) and Miami (MIA) to Milan Malpensa (MXP) in spring 2027.
