British Airways has unveiled the details behind an extensive, fleet-wide Airbus A380 cabin transformation, including the introduction of the world’s largest business class deck.

On October 5, 2026, the British flag carrier announced a mammoth A380 retrofit encompassing its first, business, premium economy and economy products.

British Airways said the transformed A380s will feature redesigned interiors, new seats in every cabin and upgrades to the onboard experience with the first completed aircraft expected to enter service in the next few months.

Each upgrade requires installation of more than 35,000 individual parts across each aircraft, reflecting the extensiveness of the task at hand.

The announcement that the aircraft will feature the world’s largest business class cabin will no doubt grab the headlines, with 106 Club Suite (business class) seats spanning the entire upper deck.

However, British Airways promises that every part of the aircraft has been refined, including galleys and stairways bringing a new look and feel to every space on board.

Sean Doyle, Chairman and CEO at British Airways, described the retrofit as a “major milestone” for the airline and “one of the most significant transformations” undertaken on any of their aircraft.

“We’ve completely reimagined the customer experience, introducing new and updated seats in every cabin, all carefully considered to deliver greater comfort and an elevated customer experience,” Doyle said. “At the heart of the transformation is our brand-new First suite, but this investment goes far beyond a single cabin.”

The CEO added: “From redesigned interiors and upgraded dining to new amenities and service delivery, every detail has been thoughtfully designed with our customers front and centre, helping them to have a more seamless and memorable experience when they fly with us.”

The latest chapter in British Airways’ journey follows the announcement in March 2024, of an $8 billion revamp including over 600 modernization initiatives covering every corner of the business.

Later that same year, British Airways also unveiled a new Concorde-inspired first-class suite that will feature on Airbus A380 flights starting in 2026.

The refurbished A380 will feature four cabins across its two decks, with 12 seats in First, 106 in Club World, 84 in World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and 215 in World Traveller (economy).

Business class record breaker

Business class seating will cover the entire upper deck of the A380 and will be separated into four distinct cabin zones.

The new business class suites feature lie-flat seats and a refreshed design with a contemporary color palette inspired by the airline’s blue, red, and cream accents.

British Airways said that the suites include added storage, improved functionality and “carefully considered features designed to make every journey more comfortable and intuitive”.

“Club Kitchens and reimagined galley spaces that encourage customers to move freely and relax throughout the flight,” British Airways said.

Customers travelling in business will also receive the airline’s latest amenity kits, available in four unique designs.

As well as brand new seats, passengers in premium economy and economy will experience larger entertainment screens, wider seats and upgraded bedding.

There will also be new pillows and plusher blankets for both sets of customers. Premium economy passengers also benefit from larger in-flight entertainment screens and privacy wings.

Customers travelling in premium economy will receive a new reusable amenity kit, designed as a tote bag for onward travel, featuring moisturizing balm and travel essentials, including a dental kit, socks and eye mask.

First class experience

As announced previously, the first-class suites have been designed to evoke a modern luxury hotel feel.

The British flag carrier described the new first-class suites as “reflective of modern British luxury travel” that combine “elegant design features” wrapped in a “game changing” product.

The new seat is ultra-wide (36.5inches), with a 6-foot 7-inch bed, and features a multi-purpose ottoman and stowable table, a 32-inch 4K TV screen, adjustable mood lighting including scenes such as ‘relax’, ‘dine’ and ‘cinema’.

The seat can be adjusted with the touch of a button to find the right level of comfort and is located within a cocooned 60-inch curved wall for ultimate privacy.

For customers travelling together in the center seats, the divider opens to create a shared lounge, while stowable tables allow them to enjoy ‘buddy dining’ with their travel companion.

Passengers will receive a bespoke unisex amenity kit and a brand-new woven day blanket, plus navy sleepwear, complemented by slippers.

Next phase of Heathrow lounge transformation

On October 5, 2026, British Airways also announced a new lounge at London-Heathrow (LHR) Terminal 5 C Gates as part of its ongoing investment to transform every lounge in its Heathrow portfolio over the coming years.

With work already underway, and due to open at the end of 2028, the lounge will offer envious views of the airfield and terminal concourse area.

“Inspired by flight and British design, the lounge will combine the airline’s new lounge concept design with materials and finishes sourced from across the UK,” British Airways said. “British craftsmanship will feature throughout, from timber and glazing to intricate metalwork, textiles and bespoke furnishings.

The airline added: “A 17-metre bar, expected to be among the world’s longest airport lounge bars, will provide a focal point for customers travelling through Terminal 5.”

There will also be a complete redevelopment of the Terminal 5 arrivals lounge and, in collaboration with American Airlines, a new first-class check-in experience at Heathrow Terminal 3.

Refurbishment of the arrivals lounge is due to start in early 2027 and scheduled to open by the end of next year.

The new first check-in experience at Heathrow Terminal 3, is set to open this winter.
