Diehl Aviation has opened a new production facility in Craiova, Romania, adding another site to the company’s European manufacturing network for commercial aircraft components.
The facility, which Diehl said was built in less than a year, spans more than 12,000 square meters of production and office space on a 33,500-square-meter plot in Romania’s Dolj region.
Diehl Aviation described the investment behind the project as a mid-double-digit million euro amount, without disclosing an exact figure.
Production is scheduled to begin in fall 2026, starting with around 75 employees, a workforce the company plans to grow to as many as 500 over the medium term. The site was also designed with room for further expansion if needed later on.
The inauguration ceremony drew a number of German and Romanian officials, including German Ambassador to Romania Angela Ganninger, Craiova Mayor Lia-Olguta Vasilescu, and Dolj County Council President Cosmin Dorin Casile
Diehl Aviation CEO Jörg Schuler described the opening as a milestone for the company, thanking Romanian authorities and project partners while pointing to the new site’s role in expanding the company’s manufacturing capacity and supporting customers globally.
What the new facility will produce
The Craiova plant will initially manufacture products already established elsewhere in Diehl Aviation’s network, including manually laminated composite cabin components, insulation blankets, and tanks used in aircraft water and waste systems.
Rather than starting from scratch, the company is transferring existing processes, technical know-how, and quality standards from its other sites to Romania.
Employees began training in aerospace manufacturing, quality management, and safety requirements in February 2026, ahead of the facility’s opening, with the aim of applying the same standards used across Diehl Aviation’s broader manufacturing operations.
The building and its production infrastructure run entirely on electricity, removing natural gas from the site’s energy mix. A rooftop solar system, currently being installed, is expected to further increase the share of renewable electricity used at the facility and reduce its overall carbon footprint.
A new site in a growing production network
Diehl Aviation operates as a Tier-1 supplier and systems integration partner, developing and manufacturing cabin and aircraft systems for commercial aviation.
The Craiova site joins the company’s existing operations in Germany, Hungary, and Mexico, adding capacity intended to support customer production ramp-ups across its international network.
The company said it chose Romania in part for its industrial base and access to skilled labor, and plans to build partnerships with regional universities to help develop engineering and manufacturing talent for the aerospace sector. Diehl Aviation also said it intends to help build up local supplier and service networks around the site over time.
The project was developed in cooperation with Global Vision, a partner the company credited with helping bring the facility to completion.
