The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reportedly opened an investigation after an American Airlines Airbus A319 rejected takeoff at Miami International Airport (MIA) when a NetJets Embraer Phenom 300 business jet entered the same runway.
The incident occurred at 6 p.m. local time on June 27, 2026. American Airlines Flight AA308 was scheduled to operate from Miami (MIA) to Bermuda (BDA) when the flight crew, after receiving takeoff clearance, observed another aircraft on the active runway and discontinued the takeoff roll.
The second aircraft involved was NetJets Flight EJA434, an Embraer Phenom 300 business jet. NetJets said the aircraft was under the operational control of a third-party maintenance vendor at the time of the incident.
Air traffic control audio indicates there was confusion over a runway crossing clearance. The controller advised the business jet crew that they had crossed an active runway, but the pilot responded that they believed they had been instructed to do so. The air traffic controller later clarified that the instruction had been intended for another aircraft.
CNN report indicated that the two aircraft came within approximately one-third of a mile of each other. No injuries were reported, and both aircraft remained under control throughout the incident. American Airlines Flight AA308 later departed safely for Bermuda.
The incident occurred during a week of heightened attention on aviation safety in the US. On June 26, a United Airlines Boeing 737 approaching Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) reportedly came within around 100 feet of a drone, prompting a separate FAA investigation. Earlier in June, the FAA and NTSB also opened investigations after a Delta Air Lines Airbus A319 and an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 came within roughly 300 feet of each other at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).
