Consolidation is taking place in the emerging French electric aviation space.
On June 23, 2026, it was reported that Toulouse-based AURA AERO is acquiring the assets of VoltAero, another French startup developing hybrid-electric aircraft.
Based in Rochefort, in Western France, VoltAero had recently been experiencing financial difficulties, and had been looking for investors in order to ensure its future.
VoltAero is a pioneer in electric and hybrid-electric aviation in Europe. It was founded in 2017 by one of the leading engineers behind the Airbus E-Fan project, which developed an experimental light electric aircraft before the project was discontinued by the aerospace giant.
The acquired assets include VoltAero’s 25,000 sq. ft (2,322 sq meters) industrial facility in Rochefort, which is dedicated to the assembly and testing of aircraft and enjoys direct access to the runway. This facility will complement AURA AERO’s existing facilities in Toulouse.
But most importantly, with this acquisition, AURA AERO is also getting VoltAero’s engineering expertise in the development of a hybrid-electric propulsion system, as well as all the flight data accumulated during the testing of the Cassio S demonstrator, which has performed 270 flight tests since 2019.
VoltAero had been working on the development of a family of hybrid-electric aircraft which would include a the four-place Cassio 330, the six-place Cassio 480, and the 10-place Cassio 600 (the numbers being a reference to each the power output of each of these aircraft types: 330 kW, 480 kW, and 600 kW, respectively).
AURA AERO has emerged as one of the leaders in the European sustainable aviation scene. The company is based at Toulouse-Francazal Airport, where it manufactures a family of light trainer aircraft called INTEGRAL (which includes conventionally powered and electric versions) and where it plans to build a new greenfield factory to produce its 19-seater hybrid-electric regional aircraft.
The company said it intends to use its new foothold in Rochefort, a site with a long aerospace and military history, to develop its ENBATA drone activities and continue electric-propulsion flight testing.
ENBATA is AURA AERO’s planned medium-altitude, long-endurance drone, developed through its defense subsidiary AURA M for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and operational support missions. The aircraft is one of several French sovereign drone designs being considered as France reassesses its MALE drone requirements after moving away from the Patroller and Eurodrone programs in favor of lower-cost national alternatives.
At Eurosatory 2026, AURA AERO signed a partnership with Thales to integrate the AirMaster C airborne surveillance radar and next-generation electronic warfare systems on ENBATA, strengthening its pitch as a French ISR platform.
So far, AURA AERO has raised €340 million, the largest part through public support mechanisms, both in France and in the state of Florida, where it has set up its US service center and plans to build a second assembly line.
