A French military aircraft crashed near Nancy in northeastern France late on October 20, 2026, prompting a major overnight search operation. Local media reported that the aircraft may have been a Mirage 2000 fighter jet based at Nancy-Ochey Air Base.

Henry Lemoine, mayor of Pont-à-Mousson, said on Facebook that the aircraft crashed at approximately 23:35 local time in an area between Rogéville, Domèvre-en-Haye and Tremblecourt, roughly 20 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of Nancy.

The mayor said debris had been spotted by a drone and that substantial firefighting and gendarmerie resources had been deployed.

According to ICI Lorraine, witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing a fireball in the sky. Emergency responders included firefighters from the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, military firefighters from Nancy-Ochey and gendarmerie personnel. A helicopter also participated in the search.

Update: French military confirms Mirage 2000D crash details

In a statement issued on October 21, 2026, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces confirmed that the aircraft belonged to Fighter Squadron 2/3 “Champagne”, based at Nancy-Ochey Air Base (BA 133). The Mirage 2000D crashed near Rogéville at approximately 22:40 local time on October 20, while returning from a mission.

France recently completed Mirage 2000D modernization

Nancy-Ochey Air Base (BA 133) is home to the French Air and Space Force’s 3rd Fighter Wing, which operates the two-seat Mirage 2000D ground-attack aircraft.

On June 16, 2026, France’s Directorate General for Armament (DGA) delivered the 50th and final Mirage 2000D upgraded under the aircraft’s mid-life renovation program, intended to extend its operational service beyond 2030.

A press briefing was scheduled for 09:00 local time on October 21, 2026, according to local media.

Previous fatal fighter jet accidents in the region

On January 9, 2019, a Mirage 2000D from Nancy-Ochey crashed near Mignovillard in the Jura mountains during a low-altitude training flight, killing its pilot and navigator.

More recently, on August 14, 2024, two Rafale fighters from Saint-Dizier collided during an air combat training exercise near Colombey-les-Belles in Meurthe-et-Moselle, killing two aircrew members.

In its investigation report published on June 10, 2026, France’s State Aviation Safety Investigation Bureau (BEA-É) found that simultaneous, opposing control inputs from the instructor and trainee aboard one aircraft temporarily prevented a coordinated evasive maneuver.
