The Indonesian Air Force has deployed its T-50i Golden Eagle to Australia’s Northern Territory for the first time, joining Exercise Pitch Black in what officials are calling a new chapter in the defense relationship between the two countries.
The T-50i Golden Eagle is a light combat aircraft built to prepare pilots for modern air combat, often compared to the F-16 Fighting Falcon for its similar look and performance.
The aircraft combines supersonic capability with advanced mission systems, serving as a bridge between foundational pilot training and frontline fighter operations.

A milestone flight for Indonesia
Letkol Pnb Djatmiko, Commanding Officer of Skadron Udara 15 of the Indonesian Air Force, said he takes pride in bringing the aircraft to Pitch Black for the first time.
“It is important for Indonesia to participate in Pitch Black, as Australia is one of our closest neighbours,” he said, adding that training alongside Australian forces helps strengthen the partnership between the two countries and contributes to regional peace and security.
Wing Commander Steven O’Hara, the Pitch Black Country Liaison Officer for Indonesia, echoed the sentiment, saying the exercise’s collective air power benefits directly from the Golden Eagle’s involvement.
“Indonesia participates in our exercises just as we participate in theirs,” O’Hara said. He called it “one of the most important defence relationships we have,” adding that the Golden Eagles are expected to operate primarily in the strike role throughout this year’s exercise.
A long-running platform for regional cooperation
Pitch Black serves as the Royal Australian Air Force’s biennial capstone exercise, bringing together 21 nations from across the Indo-Pacific and beyond. This year’s iteration runs from July 20 to August 7, with flying operations centered in northern Australia out of RAAF Bases Darwin, Tindal, and Amberley.
For Indonesia, the debut of the T-50i Golden Eagle adds a new capability to that lineup, reflecting a defense relationship built over time through shared training and mutual participation in each other’s exercises.
