Multiple US Air Force aircraft were damaged in an Iranian ballistic missile attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan overnight on September 8 and 9, 2026.
CBS News correspondent Jennifer Jacobs said on September 9, 2026, that one A-10 Thunderbolt II was struck and left with a missing wing, and that roughly eight F-15s sustained light damage and were returned to service.
Air & Space Forces Magazine reported that people familiar with the matter described an A-10 with a severely damaged wing and around eight F-15E Strike Eagles that remained serviceable.
CENTCOM did not respond to a request for comment.

In a statement carried by the official Petra news agency on September 9, 2026, a Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) spokesperson said air defenses engaged 20 ballistic missiles fired toward Jordanian territory and destroyed 18, with two falling in unpopulated areas, and that field assessments recorded no casualties. The statement did not refer to any air base or to damage to aircraft.
CENTCOM said on September 8, 2026, that US forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers, four in the Gulf of Oman and one near Kharg Island, after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) twice attempted to strike a US Navy warship.
The IRGC said its subsequent launches targeted maintenance and deployment sites for F-35, F-16 and F-15 aircraft at the Jordanian base. Neither government has released imagery substantiating the competing claims.
Damaged A-10 could prove difficult to repair
If the A-10 damage is confirmed, repair prospects are narrow. The US Air Force ended A-10 depot-level maintenance at Hill Air Force Base in Utah in February 2026, deactivating the squadron that had performed structural repair and wing replacement on the type since 1998. That closure came two months before Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink extended the fleet to 2030.
Muwaffaq Salti Air Base sits at Azraq in Zarqa Governorate and has hosted US fighter deployments for about a decade. The base has already come under deadly Iranian attack during the current conflict. Three US Army air-defense soldiers were killed there in a strike on July 17, 2026.
The reported damage follows a pattern of US aircraft being hit on the ground at regional bases, including an E-3 Sentry and several KC-135 Stratotankers at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on March 27, 2026.
