Alongside the achievements of the Wright brothers, Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, it’s hard to say where Joby’s recent autonomous flight across the United States ranks among aviation’s important historic firsts. But a Cessna Caravan traveling 3,199 miles from coast to coast without a single control input from its onboard safety pilot deserves a place in the discussion.
The modified turboprop handled its own taxiing, takeoffs and landings, completing the trip in stages from California to North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Joby announced the accomplishment on September 18, 2026, calling it the first fully autonomous flight across the US.
The company said the onboard pilot made zero control inputs throughout the journey. Ground personnel supervised operations from as far as 2,300 miles away.
Known as the J208, the aircraft is a Cessna 208B Caravan fitted with Joby’s autonomous flight technology. It began its coast-to-coast demonstrations in Concord, California, on September 8.
The eastbound route included stops in Phoenix, Fort Worth, Texas, and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina before an autonomous landing at Dare County Regional Airport. After reaching the East Coast, the aircraft also made an autonomous low pass near the Wright brothers’ First Flight Monument in Kitty Hawk, North Carilina.
The aircraft flew autonomously under the supervision of a remote pilot, who served as pilot in command, managed flight-plan updates and handled air traffic control communications through the aircraft’s radios.
An onboard safety pilot remained available to take control but made no control inputs during the journey, according to Joby.
To make the endeavor possible, Joby acquired the autonomous flight division of aviation technology developer Xwing in June 2024. Ahead of the tour, Joby said the system had logged more than 400 flights and 800 automated flight hours in controlled and uncontrolled airspace.
The Caravan has also participated in three US military exercises. During the Air Force’s Agile Flag exercises, it carried replacement parts that Joby says helped return other aircraft to service about 24 hours sooner than conventional delivery would have allowed.
The crossing forms part of a month-long demonstration tour aimed at showing how the technology could carry freight, deliver medical supplies and support military operations.
The published flight itinerary includes further stops in Louisville, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City and Portland.
California-based Joby Aviation is developing an electric air taxi that takes off and lands vertically and carries a pilot and four passengers. The company plans to use the Xwing technology to increase automation in that aircraft and eventually support autonomous operations, although it said its initial passenger service will have a pilot aboard.
