A LATAM Airlines Brasil Airbus A320 carrying 151 people ran off the runway while landing in heavy rain at Cascavel Airport (CAC) in southern Brazil on August 31, 2026.
The aircraft was operating as Flight LA3858 from São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) to Cascavel in the western part of Paraná state when it left the paved surface at around 09:45 local time.
The Airbus A320-214, registered PR-MYO, came to a stop on rain-soaked ground alongside the runway, with its landing gear partially sunk into the mud.
LATAM said 145 passengers and six crew members were aboard. Everyone evacuated the aircraft safely and no injuries were reported.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms were affecting Cascavel around the time of the incident. Weather observations showed thunderstorms and rain at the airport, with visibility reduced to less than two miles.
Passenger video shows the A320 completely off the runway and stuck in brown mud and standing water.
Flight tracking data indicates the A320 landed on Runway 15 and had slowed to around 15 knots when it began turning to backtrack along the runway. The aircraft then left the paved surface before completing the maneuver.
LATAM described the incident as occurring during the final stage of the landing but did not provide further details about what caused the aircraft to leave the runway.
The airline said it is cooperating with authorities investigating the incident and assessing how to remove the aircraft.
Cascavel Airport was closed following the runway excursion. A NOTAM initially indicated the airport could remain closed until 19:00 local time, although the reopening time was subject to change.
LATAM canceled Flight LA3859, the aircraft’s scheduled return service from Cascavel to São Paulo. The airline said affected passengers were being accommodated on other flights departing from Foz do Iguaçu.
PR-MYO is an Airbus A320-214 powered by CFM International CFM56 engines. The aircraft first flew in December 2011 and was originally delivered to TAM before the airline became part of LATAM.
