Lufthansa has confirmed in an official note released on October 25, 2023, that its newest subsidiary, City Airlines, is scheduled to launch operations in summer 2024.

The new carrier, which obtained its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) in June 2023, will operate out of Munich (MUC) and Frankfurt (FRA) airports, providing feeder services to Lufthansa’s mainline operation.

The new carrier, which already obtained its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) last June, will launch in the summer of 2024 and operate out of Munich (MUC) and Frankfurt (FRA) airports, providing feeder services to Lufthansa’s mainline operation.

Despite technically being a separate carrier, Lufthansa made it clear in its communiqué that the customer experience offered by City Airlines will be practically undistinguishable from that offered by its parent company.

When it comes to branding and the external appearance of its aircraft, the new airline will also be aligned with that of Lufthansa.

City Airlines will begin the hiring process for pilots and cabin crew members in November 2023. To increase the pool of potential applicants, the process is open to English-speaking pilots, making it implicit that fluency in German is no longer a requirement.

The new airline operation will start with Airbus A319 aircraft, but Lufthansa also noted it was considering a switch to other aircraft types in the same size category in the longer term. Both Embraer aircraft (presumably the E190/E195 E2 family) and the Airbus A220 are being considered.
