A man has tragically died at Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) after being ingested inside the engine of an Airbus A319 aircraft as it was pushing back at the airport’s runway.

The accident occurred on July 8, 2025 at around 10:20 local time. Operations at the airport have since been suspended, and flights have been diverted to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP).

The man, aged 35, was believed to have run onto the tarmac and into the path of a Volotea Airbus A319 aircraft that was completing pushback bound for Asturias Airport (OVD) in Spain, operating under flight V73511.

Both the airport and Volotea have confirmed the incident on their respective social media pages, and while an official report is yet to be made, the airline said it will provide more information soon.

SACBO, Milan Bergamo’s operator, said that “the causes of the problem are currently being investigated by the authorities.”

It is not known yet whether the man is a passenger or an airport worker.
