Poland’s FA-50GF light combat aircraft have entered Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) duty as part of the country’s air defense system, more than three years after the first jets arrived in Poland.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the step on X, saying the aircraft had entered combat duty and would further strengthen Poland’s eastern border.

Alert duty began on October 1, 2026, according to Brigadier General Norbert Chojnacki, commander of the 2nd Tactical Air Wing, who spoke at a conference marking 20 years of F-16 operations in Poland.

The aircraft operate from the 23rd Tactical Air Base in Mińsk Mazowiecki, previously home to MiG-29 fighters that were transferred to the 22nd Tactical Air Base in Malbork.

Poland ordered 48 FA-50s from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) in 2022. The first 12, designated FA-50GF for Gap Filler, were delivered in the second half of 2023. The remaining 36 aircraft are to be delivered in the more capable FA-50PL configuration.

The move to QRA duty gives the FA-50GF a defined operational role within Poland’s air defense architecture after several years spent building up personnel, training and procedures around the new type.

“The FA-50GF will be used primarily to counter potential threats, including jet-powered combat drones such as the Geran-4 and Geran-5,” Major General Ireneusz Nowak, operational commander of the Polish Armed Forces, said in remarks carried by Polska Zbrojna on October 2, 2026.

Both are Russian jet-powered attack drones, according to the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. It lists the Geran-5, first used in January 2026, at a cruising speed of 450 to 600 kilometers per hour (280 to 373 miles per hour), and said Russia introduced the Geran-4 in May 2026 to counter Ukraine’s interceptor drones.

Nowak added that Poland would consider employing the FA-50PL “much more broadly” once the upgraded variant enters service.

Poland is still waiting for the 36 FA-50PL aircraft intended to provide substantially greater combat capability.

Deliveries are now scheduled to begin in mid-2027 and finish in early 2029, according to the revised program timetable.

The FA-50PL is expected to receive upgraded radar, avionics, weapons, and other improvements over the Gap Filler configuration.

In January 2026, Poland’s Armament Agency signed documents covering the integration of the AIM-9X Sidewinder with the FA-50PL.

Until those aircraft arrive, the FA-50GF will give Poland another platform for QRA and air defense missions alongside its heavier combat aircraft, with the Polish military placing particular emphasis on using the light fighter against emerging unmanned threats.
