Virgin Australia has extended its Pets in Cabin trial through June 30, 2026, citing higher than expected bookings and positive feedback since the service launched in October 2025.
The trial, initially scheduled to conclude at the end of January 2026, will continue operating on flights between Melbourne Airport (MEL) and the Gold Coast Airport (OOL) and Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY). Virgin Australia said it plans to expand the service to additional domestic routes in the coming months.
More than 300 dogs and cats traveled on Pets in Cabin flights during the peak Christmas 2025 period alone, demonstrating strong demand from pet owners wanting to travel with their animals.
Starting January 31, 2026, cats will be permitted on all Pets in Cabin flights. Previously, feline passengers were limited to Melbourne-Sunshine Coast services only.
Exceeding forecasts
Libby Minogue, Virgin Australia Chief Marketing and Customer Operations Officer, said the response has exceeded the airline’s expectations, with bookings significantly above forecast.
“Our decision to extend the Pets in Cabin service trial until June this year reinforces the value of innovating around what our guests care about, and we know that they care deeply about traveling with their pets,” Minogue said. “We’ve not only received strong, positive feedback from pet owners, but also guests traveling without pets.”
Velocity Frequent Flyer members can book Pets in Cabin flights using 18,600 Velocity Points per eligible sector, in addition to their own fare.
Industry response
Dr. Katrina Warren, a veterinarian and pet expert, described the service as a game changer for owners of small dogs and cats.
“I’m thrilled that Virgin Australia is extending its Pets in Cabin trial,” Warren said. “It’s wonderful to see the success of the trial, and I hope it paves the way for a broader rollout in the near future.”
Airport representatives also welcomed the extension. Scott Dullard, Melbourne Airport General Manager Operations, said the trial has introduced greater choice and flexibility for travelers, opening new travel opportunities for all family members, including pets.
Chris Mills, Sunshine Coast Airport Chief Executive Officer, noted the positive response to the service.
“We know pets are part of the family and the response to the Pets in Cabin service has been very positive,” Mills said.
Marion Charlton, Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer, said the airport was proud to support the trial extension.
“Our customers value being able to fly with their pets, which is why we’re proud to support an extension of this trial that keeps our customers—both two- and four-legged—traveling together,” Charlton said.
Virgin Australia is the first major Australian airline to offer a pets-in-cabin service on domestic flights.
