Virgin Australia has launched its first-ever international flight from Canberra, connecting the Australian capital directly with Bali.

The inaugural service departed Canberra Airport (CBR) for Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar on June 22, 2026, marking a milestone for both the airline and the city.

A new gateway to Bali

The route will operate three times per week using Boeing 737-800 aircraft, adding more than 40,000 seats annually between Canberra and Bali.

The service strengthens Virgin Australia’s existing Bali network, which includes direct flights from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast, collectively offering more than 500,000 seats per year to the island.

Libby Minogue, Virgin Australia’s Chief Marketing and Customer Operations Officer, said the new route fills a gap in the market.

“With more than 40,000 seats a year now available to book between Canberra and Bali, the new service is creating more choice and connectivity for travelers while making it easier than ever to reach Bali,” Minogue said.

Serving regional communities

Beyond Canberra residents, the route is expected to benefit travelers from surrounding regional areas including Batemans Bay, Bega, Cooma, Jindabyne, and Merimbula, who previously had to travel via Sydney or Brisbane for international flights.

Andrew Barr, Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory, said the service simplifies travel for thousands of locals.

“Bali is one of the most popular destinations for Australians, and now thousands of Canberrans will be able to skip the queues and airport transfers, and fly direct from home,” Barr said.

Building on a long partnership

Stephen Byron, CEO of Canberra Airport, described the launch as a meaningful moment in the airport’s 23-year relationship with Virgin Australia.

“It’s especially meaningful as the first international service from Canberra by an Australian airline,” Byron said. “This is just the beginning of even more international growth opportunities for Canberra in the years ahead.”

The service will operate seasonally, with Virgin Australia able to increase frequency during peak travel periods based on demand. The airline offers Business Class, Economy X with extra legroom, and Economy Class on the route.

To mark the launch, Virgin Australia is offering return sale fares from Canberra to Bali starting at AU$449 (US$292).
