At Least 49 People Died In A Plane Crash In Nepal
Bangladesh based US-Bangla Airlines carrier crashed today near Kathmandu, Nepal. Aircraft was carrying 67 passengers and 4 crew members, at least 49 of them died.
The flight was operated by Basanta Bohara, a Nepali tour operator. It was supposed to be a two-hour flight from Dhaka to Nepal. Just right before the landing aircraft started to act strangely, survivors report.
The carrier crashed in the field just right next to the airport and burst into flames. The majority of the passengers died in the crash, the survivors managed to leave the aircraft crawling through the broken plane windows. The survivors were taken to the closest hospital and fighting their life.
It is reported that 32 of the passengers were Bangladeshi nationals, 33 Nepalis, 1 Chinese and 1 person from the Maldives.Rescue Operation
Witnesses described rescue operation to be chaotic as the soldiers and staff were dragging people from the wreckage when black smoke showed up.
Aviation consultant, Andrew Blackie, commented on a situation mainly emphasizing the fact that this is not the first incident for the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 and it was already known that this model has some issues with the landing gear. Therefore this case should be investigated exceptionally closely taking into consideration all the aspects such as mechanical, weather and others.
The spokesperson of the airport, Prem Nath Thakur, shortly added: “We will be able to ascertain the cause of the crash after a thorough investigation”.
Till this accident, Nepal‘s airspace was considered to be exclusively safe. This is the deadliest and most tragic accident since 1990 when 40 people died in the plane crash.
