Russian Bomber Explodes into Fireball During Take-off
Russian bomber explodes into fireball during take-off
The shocking moment a Russian bomber explodes into an enormous fireball during a botched take-off in June last year has been captured in newly released video. The footage was taken of the Russian Air Force's TU-95 strategic bomber has only just been uncovered by a Russian news agent. It was sent to them anonymously and recorded the fatal moment the plane rolls down the runway. Video has been posted on YouTube by a local news service.
The dramatic minute - long clip shows the Tu - 95 — a type of Soviet-built nuclear bomber that has been flying since the 1950s — attempting to take off from an air base in the far eastern Amur region, on China's border. The four-engine turboprop-powered bomber was getting up speed on an airfield when the left wing suddenly exploded and the plane tipped to its left. Seemingly without warning an explosion engulfs the plane in fire as it skids on the tarmac and falls to pieces. Two of the bomber's five-man crew were reportedly killed during the incident. "The Tu-95 ran over the runway during acceleration," the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation said in a statement."There was no ammunition on board. According to preliminary information, engine fire was the cause behind the accident.
The bomber was the second Tu-95 to crash during routine operations over last year's summer months in Russia. The Cold War - era strategic bomber first entered service in the USSR in 1956 and is not anticipated to be phased out until 2040. The drama prompted Russian authorities to ground all Tu-95 bombers, after another had caught fire during take-off. But bombers nicknamed 'the bear' have played an integral part in Russia's Air Force bombing of ISIS in Syria, a campaign launched at the end of September last year.
