Storm Imogen winds bounce plane off London runway

This is the tense moment a pilot was forced to abandon landing as Storm Imogen winds battered a passenger plane. The Alitalia plane was filmed strongly swaying  from side to side as it came in to land at London City Airport on Monday. Video shows the flight from Milan, as it touch down on the runway before bouncing straight off again. The pilot managed to control the aircraft and take it back into the air as it continued to wobble threateningly.

The touching moment came as Storm Imogen continued to batter the UK. Britain was lashed by hurricane-force winds that reached nearly 100mph and torrential rains as a cataclysmic weather system called Storm Imogen battered parts of the country and claimed its first tragic victims. Storm also brought travel disruption and multiple flood warnings. The Met Office issued a yellow severe weather warning for rain and a more serious amber weather warning for wind.

There are just a few weeks of the winter storm season remaining and the Met Office has used nine of the 21 alphabetical storm names introduced under a pilot scheme in the autumn. The naming scheme is due to end when spring arrives in a few weeks time - heralding a lessening of severe stormy weather coming in to the UK. A Met Office spokeswoman said: "We are at Storm Imogen and we are a third of the way through February. We have three weeks of winter left so we are not going to reach the end of the alphabet. We may continue to name storms at the start of spring but it will tail off." The system was introduced in the autumn by the Met Office and Ireland's Met Eireann, based on recommendations from the public through email and social media.
