The Pilot Synthetic Training System (PSTS) consortium under the industrial leadership of Airbus has been commissioned to modernize the German simulators of the Eurofighter Typhoon. The update follows an order for 90 Typhoons by the German government.
The first agreement covers the modernization of two Full Mission Simulators (FMS) and Cockpit Trainers (CT) at the Main Operating Base (MOB) in Laage, northeastern Germany. In addition, two more new FMS will be built and delivered. With four simulators working as a network, formation flights can be practiced.
The second contract will see ten FMS and as many CT cockpits brought up to the new standard in the bases of Neuburg, Laage, Wittmund, Nörvenich, and the Central Integration Facility at Airbus Manching.
The new high-resolution Visual Display Systems allow for night flights to be simulated, as the entire cockpit will be night vision goggle compatible. Additionally, the new cockpit is able to simulate G-forces.
The contracts for the modernization of the training capabilities of the Luftwaffe come two months after Germany ordered another batch of 90 Eurofighter Typhoons. The fighter jets will come as a complement to the 45 Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets that will replace the Panavia Tornado fleet in its nuclear role.
