“Miracle on the Hudson” Sully named US ambassador to ICAO

President of the United States Joe Biden named Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger as the US representative on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Sully is known worldwide for having landed a US Airways A320 on the Hudson River in New York City, on January 15, 2009. A few minutes after taking off from New York La Guardia (LGA), his aircraft ingested a flock of birds, resulting in the failure of both engines.

After electing that the plane could not reach back its departing airport, Sully chose to land on the water. The incident made no casualty or major injury among the 155 passengers.

From heroic pilot to aviation ambassador, Sully’s appointment is not that surprising after his involvement in Biden’s presidential campaign.
