IATA certifies non-member Cebu Pacific for operational safety
The Philippine low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific Air announced on April 12, 2018, it has achieved full compliance with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), considered to be the benchmark for global safety management in airlines.
Although Cebu Pacific is not a member of IATA (all members are registered to the IOSA and must remain registered in order to maintain IATA membership), the carrier is now listed in the IOSA Registry of operators that have met the benchmark for airline safety management.
“We are committed to upholding the highest possible standards for the benefit of our passengers. Hence, we chose to undergo the rigorous and stringent audit requirements for IOSA,” said Lance Gokongwei, President and CEO of Cebu Pacific, in an official statement, adding that, “We wanted to be sure that our protocols and regulations meet IOSA standards.”
Over the past several months, Cebu Pacific invested in technology to better manage safety risks, the airline states. These include the on-board Runway Overrun Prevention System (ROPS) cockpit technology for its Airbus fleet, which monitors runway conditions before landing and calculates where the aircraft can safely stop; the Area Navigation (RNAV) data for more accurate navigation and approaches to various airports; and the Fatigue Risk Management System for pilots to minimize safety risks and ensure they are at adequate levels of alertness.
Using internationally agreed standards and global best practices, the IOSA audits airlines’ operations management and control systems such as flight dispatch, cabin engineering and maintenance, aircraft ground handling and operational security, among others. Airlines are re-evaluated for IOSA certification every two years
