Qantas’ special 787 Dreamliner rolls out paintshop
While Qantas still has a year and a few weeks left before officially starting to count its age in three-digit numbers, the Flying Kangaroo’s newest Dreamliner is already wearing the centenary symbolics. And the number 100 is not the only thing that is unique about this aircraft. Take a look at the special livery below!
The flag carrier of Australia and now its largest airline in terms of international flights, destinations and fleet, began its journey in November 1920. Turning 99 in a few weeks Qantas is regarded as the world’s third oldest airline still in operation, preceded only by KLM (celebrating its grand birthday already this year) and Avianca.
Eager to enter its 100th year of operations, as the airline itself puts it, Qantas is already showing off a brand new Boeing 787 with a special livery to mark the upcoming occasion. Besides the obvious 100 imprint, the livery also features each of Qantas’ logos since its founding.
Special in more than one (livery) way
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, registration VH-ZNJ, rolled out the paint shop at Boeing’s factory in Washington State on October 15, 2019. The Dreamliner is named Longreach as “a nod” to Queensland ‒ a town that was “integral” to Qantas’ beginnings. The delivery is expected the following month, as the airliner is still to undergo a series of delivery test flights in Seattle.
Besides kicking off early the centenary (or pre-centenary) celebrations, the Dreamliner will also operate the second of Qantas’ Project Sunrise research flights. The non-stop flight from London to Sydney will replicate the journey of the first 747-400 delivery 30 years ago, according to a statement by Qantas.
