American Airlines is gearing up for what it expects to be its biggest summer ever, with plans to carry 75 million passengers across 750,000 flights during its 2026 travel season.

The airline announced on May 10, 2026, that the upcoming summer period, running from May 21 through September 8, 2026, is set to break its previous passenger record from 2019.

The milestone comes during American’s centennial year, marking 100 years since its origins as an air mail carrier in the Midwest.

Memorial Day sets the pace

The summer kicks off with Memorial Day weekend, when American expects to welcome more than 4.2 million customers across 40,000 flights from May 21 to May 26, 2026. According to the carrier, May 22, 2026, is projected to be the busiest day of the holiday stretch.

At peak, the airline will have five flights, carrying nearly 500 passengers, taking off every minute.

The single busiest day of the summer is expected to be July 17, 2026, with 6,995 flights scheduled. July 10, 2026 follows closely with 6,991 flights.

New routes this summer

American is adding two European destinations from Philadelphia: Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) in Hungary and Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) in the Czech Republic.

The airline is also launching new long-haul routes from DFW to Athens International Airport (ATH) in Greece and Zurich Airport (ZRH) in Switzerland, as well as Miami International Airport (MIA) to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) in Italy.

The top three non-hub destinations for the summer are Orlando International Airport (MCO), London Heathrow, and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).

Hub improvements driving reliability

American has made several operational changes heading into the summer, with a focus on reducing delays and missed connections.

At Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), its largest hub, the airline introduced a new 13-bank schedule that has already shown results. In its first month, the revamped schedule reduced customer misconnections and gate changes, delivered record baggage handling performance, and lifted customer satisfaction scores.

At Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), a redesigned afternoon schedule for transatlantic flights has eased congestion and improved on-time departures.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) is also expected to run more smoothly this summer after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) took action to bring flight schedules in line with the airport’s operational capacity. American expects to welcome more than 5.2 million passengers at O’Hare this summer, an 11% increase from 2025 and 48% higher than 2023.

David Seymour, American’s Chief Operating Officer, said the airline has built an operation designed to handle peak demand.

“From the way we’ve restructured our hubs to the investments we’ve made in scheduling, our more than 130,000 team members have built an operation that’s not only reliable and resilient, but ready for the summer peak demand,” Seymour said.

New tools for passengers

American has rolled out several customer-facing improvements ahead of the summer rush.

The airline now offers digital tools that explain why a flight is delayed or canceled and let passengers rebook, track bags, or access vouchers directly through the app. Samsung Wallet users can now store boarding passes with live updates, an industry first.

Free Wi-Fi is now available for AAdvantage members on nearly every American flight. TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, which allows travelers to verify their identity without presenting an ID at security, is live at 60 airports including all American hubs.

For passengers connecting between DFW and London Heathrow Airport (LHR), a One Stop Security program now allows them to proceed to their next flight without reclaiming baggage or passing through additional screening.

Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, said the investments reflect a focus on making travel easier.

“From free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members to tools that give customers greater clarity and control when plans change to a more seamless security experience, we’re investing in a smoother, more connected travel experience for everyone flying with us this summer,” Garboden said.
