An Airbus A320neo aircraft operated by India’s low-cost carrier IndiGo missed a taxiway exit, causing a runway blockage at India’s largest airport.

The incident occured on February 11, 2024, when the IndiGo Airbus A320-271neo aircraft, registered as VT-IZN, was operating its regular daily flight 6E2221 between Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ) and Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).

According to the flight history found on Flightradar24.com, the plane departed from ATQ airport at 7:30 a.m. (local time) and was expected to land safely at its destination around 8:35 a.m. (local time). However, upon landing, it missed its designated taxiway exit and proceeded to the dead end of runway 28/10.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported following the incident. Nevertheless, the taxiway overshoot resulted in an approximately 15-minute-long runway blockage at India’s busiest airport, affecting all scheduled arrivals and departures.

In response to the incident, the airline’s spokesperson explained that it could have been caused by low visibility.

“IndiGo flight 6E 2221, operating from Amritsar to Delhi, missed the exit taxiway after landing at Delhi airport due to low visibility. The aircraft stopped at the end of the runway and was towed to the parking bay by a tug. IndiGo prioritizes operational safety above all else and regrets any inconvenience caused to passengers,” the IndiGo spokesperson was cited as saying by The Times of India.

Delhi Airport resumed its regular operations immediately after VT-IZN was towed to the parking bay.
