Lufthansa has picked Japan’s capital city Tokyo as the launch destination for the maiden commercial flight of its first Airbus A350-1000 widebody.
On October 15, 2026, the German flag carrier announced that the first of 15 A350-1000s will depart Munich on December 3, 2026, before arriving at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND).
The aircraft, registered D-AIFA and named Deutschland, is currently stationed at the Airbus facility in Toulouse, France, and is scheduled for delivery in mid-November 2026.
Around one week ago, the Lufthansa A350-1000 conducted its first test flight, flying for around three and a half hours.
The A350-1000 features Lufthansa’s special centenary livery and will become the seventh aircraft in the airline’s anniversary fleet.
In the weeks that follow the Tokyo launch, Shanghai and Singapore will also be added to the destination portfolio.
Lufthansa said all flights will feature the Allegris cabin and be flown by the A350-1000 and the A350-900 alternately.
“We are proud that the Airbus A350-1000—Airbus’s most modern long-haul aircraft—is coming to Munich,” said Heiko Reitz, Lufthansa Airlines Board member and Hub Manager Munich. “The introduction of the new A350-1000 is part of the largest fleet modernization in the history of the Lufthansa Group and a key driver on the path to more sustainability.”
Reitz added: “Our new flagship features 40 percent more Business and Premium Economy seats. To put it simply: The A350-1000 strengthens our premium hub in Munich.”
All 15 Airbus A350-1000s will be delivered by 2030. The first 10 will join Lufthansa and be based in Munich. Lufthansa Group has not confirmed where the other five aircraft will be allocated.
Other airlines that operate the A350-1000 include Qatar Airways, British Airways, Emirates and Virgin Atlantic, according to ch-aviation data.
Qatar Airways has the largest number of A350-1000s with 29 active aircraft, followed by British Airways with 18.
