A Kodiak 100 seaplane made a hard landing on the East River off Manhattan’s 23rd Street in New York City on July 5, 2026.
Video footage of the incident posted online and shared on social media shows the aircraft bouncing off the surface of the water twice before becoming destabilized and ending up with its left wing and the fuselage leaning towards one side and partly submerged.
The moment of the impact was also captured on video by one of the passengers.
All eight occupants of the aircraft (six passengers and two crew members) were rescued by emergency services, with only one person reportedly suffering minor injuries.
According to The New York Times, the seaplane had been inbound from the upmarket resort area of The Hamptons, in eastern Long Island.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will now investigate the incident, which appears to have been caused by one of the aircraft’s wing struts snapping upon hitting a wave. The aircraft had to be towed from the mid-river spot where the incident took place.
