In the wake of extensive delays and budget overruns for the building of two new ‘Air Force One’ 747-8s, the US Department of Defense is preparing to take delivery of a lavishly appointed Boeing 747-8 private jet as a stopgap.
The Boeing 747-8KB was delivered to Qatar Amiri Flight in April 2012 with registration A7-HJA. It was subsequently used by the House of Thani with registration A7-HBJ, a nod to the initials of Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, former Qatari Prime Minister and the primary user of the jet. Over a decade later, in June 2023, it was delivered to Global Jet Isle of Man, acquiring a new registration once more – P4-HBJ, with the P4 signifying it is registered in Aruba, a popular flag of convenience for private jets.
When (and if) it is officially transferred to the DoD, it will have a new registration again. Whether it will retain its HBJ suffix remains to be seen, but it could well take on something more patriotic, such as DJT, for instance. The current Air Force One 747s have tail numbers 28000 and 29000, so it may not follow traditional registration formats at all.
Whatever the tail number, the free-of-charge transfer of this VIP jet to the US is considered one of the most expensive diplomatic gifts of all time. But what will President Trump actually be getting? Let’s take a look.
Inside the Qatari Boeing 747-8 private jet
The 747 interior was originally designed and outfitted by design house Cabinet Alberto Pinto. The firm has completed many custom VIP jet interiors in the past, but the 747-8 is the largest and most ambitious private jet project it has ever worked on. It took four years to complete and is often described as a ‘flying mansion.’

Taking cues from the cabins of superyachts and luxury apartments, the interior is dominated by a mix of textures and materials, with clever backlighting to accentuate features or to make furniture appear to float.

The cabin is 4,500 square feet (418 square meters), and usually an aircraft of this size would carry up to 450 passengers. This jet accommodates far fewer, although in much nicer surroundings.

The entryway to the jet features curved walls and a lit staircase to the upper deck. Up the stairs, in the 747’s iconic ‘hump,’ is a living room complete with bookshelves, a corner sofa and a giant flat screen TV.

Behind the living area is a children’s play space and the crew quarters. The 747-8 has the largest upper deck of any 747, so it comfortably accommodates the crew and these other rooms.
On the lower deck, the 747 has been designed with home touches in mind. Private office spaces are complemented with recliner leather chairs and entertainment systems. Various small meeting spaces are scattered around the deck, with the 747’s cavernous cabin able to accommodate many rooms.

The centerpiece of the jet is its main living space, which features three full size sofas and vaulted ceilings. Furnishings are designer and bespoke, including a wacapou wood table with a goatskin top.

Opposite the seating area is a round table, perfect for dining or even a game of cards. Various other seating options are within the main lounge, including pairs of recliners with tables in between, ideal for private chats and intimate drinks.

Further aft, a private office space features more bookshelves and a table for four. While it’s been decked out as an office, the table can also double as a dining space for a more private dinner.

Throughout the jet, seating is high-end, with luxurious leather and electronically controlled recline functions.

Guest bedrooms are furnished in similar opulence, and all have en suite facilities.

Right at the back of the aircraft is a cabin of business class seating, ideal for hosting an entourage or other staff. For President Trump, this may well serve as the press seating – a significant upgrade from the economy class seating usually reserved for media on the current Air Force One 747s.

President Trump’s quarters on the Boeing 747-8 private jet
For President Trump, the Boeing 747-8 private jet boasts a luxurious en suite bedroom. This master suite is located in the nose of the aircraft, directly under the cockpit. It’s the most private area of the aircraft, and the quietest as it’s the furthest from the engines.

The bedroom features a large bed with a tan leather base, plus a two-seat sofa for relaxing in private. Sidewalls are lined with counters and storage, while a door leads on to the en suite bathroom.

In the bathroom, there is a walk-in shower, a full size vanity with a mirror and sink. Gold accents complement the dark wood trims, and the cream color palette makes the plane look modern and high end.

Speaking to Altitudes Magazine, Yves Pickardt, project lead, commented that, “The owner gave us carte blanche. He wasn’t looking for anything outrageously luxurious, with gold and diamonds. On the contrary, he called for some simplicity, which in the end is indeed the true luxury.”

Four years of labor went into this enormous Boeing 747-8 private jet. “Such a project is a dream come true that happens only once or twice in a designer’s lifetime,” continued Pickardt. “In a way, this is a landmark in aviation history.”

There has been no indication that President Trump intends to alter the interior of the jet in any way. Certainly, the gold walls, plush carpeting and luxurious style is very in-keeping with the President’s known aesthetic, so we can expect any cosmetic changes to be minor.
The major changes will be around installing the necessary communication and security systems required on any aircraft operating as Air Force One. Defense contractor L3 Harris has been tasked with overhauling the plane to meet the DoD’s requirements.

There still needs to be the emergency operating room for medical issues. Definitely a huge upgrade from the previous AF-1’s. What about the back-up AF-1s?
The two being built (VC-25B) will still be the permanent AF1s once finished, although that’s not expected before 2027/2028. This plane will be sent to the Donald Trump Presidential Library at the end of his term.
Just more racketeering examples of this administration!!?
Exactly. Open check book for a criminal.
Blatant corruption.
💯💯
I don’t think you understand corruption. Typically, corruption isn’t announced in a press release. In order for it to be corruption you have to find where Trump was personally enriched by the deal. These were gifts to the USA. Kinda. These planes have been sitting for a while and have been for sale for a long time with no buyer in sight. When you consider the cost of storing and maintaining a huge aircraft that never gets used I would bet it wouldn’t take long to eat up the cost of the plane. So I think it was just a way to get rid of an expensive hanger ornament and buy some good will with the USA at the same time.
It’s funny to me that the same people that see the corruption in this deal, don’t see corruption in Hunter Biden taking a multimillion dollar job he wasn’t qualified for, from a state owned oil company, in a country that was getting billions of dollars of aid from the USA, while his dad was vice president.
Just saying… you know?
I don’t think YOU understand corruption. Just because it’s in a press release doesn’t make it legal. What about the Emollient Clause that PROHIBITS taking foreign gifts valued at $400 or more? Trump is violating that clause simply because he knows as president, no one can (or will) stop him. It’s a personal gift he’s getting as president of the United States… you don’t see a conflict of interest in that? Republicans would be screaming their heads off if Biden (or any Democrat) did this. We all know a presidential library doesn’t need a 747. Funny how Trump cut $1 trillion from Medicaid and his new plane costs exactly $1 trillion to refurbish. So, taxpayers are paying $1 trillion for TACO to get a free flying palace while Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security all get cut. Trump said it himself: “I don’t care about you. I just want your vote.” MAGA’s answer to everything is “Hunter Biden” – that horse is dead… but I’ll even give you that. So, what about the $650 million Jared Kershner made while in the administration and the Saudi’s investing $2 billion in his company after he left? I never hear MAGA complain about that.
Usa pays a billion dollars then transfers to
the Drumpf presidential library. A (non) profit foundation. ? No. Right to jail
Exactly… as well as blatant stupidity in creating a potential security leak that’s unnecessary.
Can you tell me what’s wrong with the current vc25? Gotta be the best condition 747’s anywhere, why are they suddenly obsolete that it makes sense to refurbish this one? Besides no back up?? No inflight refueling? No escape pod? No faraday cage?
Spot on!
The current AF1’s are nearing 40 years old.
The Air Force one fleet have very few flight cycles on the fuselages. (Low miles). Flown by old men once a week.
The B52 is over 65 yrs old. Still in service.
The AF1 fleet will make that no problem.
The current two are not suddenly obsolete; Obama ordered replacements for the current 2 used, but they have been delayed. Currently AF1 planes log about 1k miles/month whereas this one only has about 1k miles every used. That being said, I finally got the answer to why they would want to get rid of it; the Qataris put this plane up for sell in 5 years ago and have not been able to sell it, so they are basically spending money on maintaining a plane that they do not use. I knew it had nothing to do with Trojan Horse theory people were trying to say.
Is that the depth of your thinking? Just because the Qatari’s have a reason to sell it, doesn’t make it okay for Trump to accept it. If that’s your point, then Trump should be personally paying for it because it won’t be finished (retrofitted) before 2028 (unless he makes them cut corners so he can show off his new ride). This plane won’t be done any sooner than the new AF-747s, so, what’s the point? Oh, I know… Trump gets a free $1 trillion flying palace to take as a parting gift (if he actually leaves).
There’s nothing wrong with them. Trump just wants the “biggest and best” so he can gloat to the rest of the world, and he’ll get a free $1 trillion plane for his personal use after (or should I say if?) he leaves. He has no intention of grounding that plane. And, they say it’s a “stop gap” while the other two 747s are being built. Funny how the two US Air Force 747s will be ready for service in 2028-29 and so will this jet. So, where’s the stop gap?
Maybe Trump will only be given 2 of these instead of 30 for Christmas.
Highlight comment of the day. Thank you. Hilarious
I don’t like it, it looks old not modern, not impressed at all.
It’s free! Boeing is the problem, not Trump!
Yeah, Donald’s positively a Saint…
So show us the interior of yours then…
Fortunately you , as would I; have the chance of a snowball in hell to ever set foot inside one of these.
thought the same..
Well, I started the design of this cabin in 2006. And as a french designer, I added a touch of art deco in it. And by the way, the first owner didn’t want anything “modern”. “Modern” always becomes quickly old fashioned.
Anything you’d like to know about this aircraft, just ask 🙂
Theis is a gift to the USA not Trump. He doesn’t get to keep it for himself after his term.
He said he’s transferring it to his presidential library after his term so seems he intends to keep it. It’s for him, not America.
Reagan put his AF1 in his library. Did that make it his?
Actually he will. He’s just laundering it to himself. It goes to the DOD but after his term it’s being transferred to his “library” which will give it to him. So it’s all a scam to enrich himself, just like everything else he does.
You got that right Scotty!
This is in direct violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution. It’s a security risk. Who knows what devices are on it that may not be found in a sweep? The Government will have to spend millions on it to install enhanced security and communications measures. AF1 is supposed to be a “flying White House,” as it was used by Bush on 9/11. in addition, there’s always a back up AF1 in case of maintenance. There are too many questions and problems with this.
Do you mean billions?
If they start today, the probably wouldn’t be able to finish the work by the end of the term. Figure probably a year or more just to do the design.
There is no escape pod in the current Air Force One as one commenter mentioned (only in the movie!). I wouldn’t say the Qatari plane would be a huge upgrade. Might be a little fancier but not designed to meet the communications or travelers other needs, like meeting rooms, the medical suite, etc.
Donald Dump accepting a $400M bribe from Qatar after he announced plans to build a major resort there – all you MAGAts who screamed about Hunter Biden are awfully quiet today.
You are so correct Tired! Something really fishy about all this!!!!
Got a little vomit in the back of my throat. This behemoth belongs next to Howard Hughes Spruce Goose
Looks AWESOME. Your comments are full of bitterness.
Thank you Lana. It is incomprehensible that the “Resistance” is reduced to hyperbolic snark about anything and everything Trump does, however beneficial to the country, however innocuous. As he and others said, if he found a cure for cancer, they would find something to criticize about it. It’s just tiresome.
You say, “if he found a cure for cancer, they would find something to criticize about ” ….
We don’t have to worry about that from the same President Orange who was telling people maybe they could be injected with bleach to kill Covid!!! Well with that mentality we don’t ever have to worry about him finding a cure for cancer!!! haha lol hehe
I think it’s nice except for the stupid paintings on the walls .
So can I now start accepting a $51 round of golf from contractors looking to do business or will I still lose my federal job for violating the $20 per gift / $50 over lifetime rule?
Would be nice to see this new 747 as our Air Force one. Our current one looks old and dated when on the ramp with other nations presidential planes during meetings. This new one screams America is back and come partner with us. I hope they go thru with the donation to the department of defense as we have invested way more in the Middle East over the years.
No wonder he’s salivating. What a money pit.
Let’s make a swap, the Qatar plane for one of the two new Boeing 747’s if when they are finally ready!
The two current B747-8’s being built to become VC-25’s we purchased by the U.S. Air Force. Both were undelivered 747-8I’s ordered by the bankrupt Russian firm TRANSAERO.
I don’t see anyone crying about these two Russian 747’s being converted to the Air Force One fleet.
In 1947 Saudi Arabian Airlines, as it was then known, commenced scheduled operations with it’s first aircraft, a Douglas DC-3 that was a gift from US President Franklin D. Roosevelt to King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud after their historic meeting in the Suez Canal.
It was flown to Saudi Arabia by former World War II pilot Captain Joe Grant. Capt. Grant remained in Saudi Arabia and work as the pilot of the Saudi royal family.
So the precedence goes back over 80 years. So what are all the Crocodile tears about now?
I can’t tell if you’re being willfully stupid or if you don’t know you’re doing it.
1. Those 747-8Is were never delivered to Russia, they were stored in the Mojave awaiting payment until the Russian company went under. So it’s more like the US just buying 747-8Is that happened to be sitting around waiting for a buyer. Did you think Russia gifted them to us?
2. You wrote it yourself. We gifted the Saudis the plane, not the other way around. The Saudis have significantly less global power than the United States so while accepting a gift like that could be considered corrupt, it would only have localized impact. You probably believe the US president is the most powerful person in the world. Why would we want to normalize bribing someone with that much power? I feel like the leaders of the US should be held to a higher standard than the rulers of Saudi Arabia.
3. Just because corrupt actions happened in the past, doesn’t mean that corruption (especially of this scale) should be tolerated today. You cited an example from 80 years ago and at the time that plane was at most $80K which is around $1.85 million today which comes nowhere near the estimated value of the plane that the POTUS is talking about accepting and then keeping personally.
Because he intends to keep it for himself. If he actually transfers it to his library and makes it nonfunctional, then fine, but he’s not going to do that. And you just used Saudi Arabia as an example. You know, the dictatorship? Is that the bar now? I could go on and on. We already have 2 in progress as you mentioned. The two that were undelivered, so never spent time in another nations hands, unlike this one. This one will be hundreds of millions of dollars to do security checks and retrofit. Its stupid, and if any democrat did this Maga would be their little melting snowflake selves and cry and cry.
Because this will not become a Air Force asset. The Air Force will spend one billion dollars upgrading it and then it will pass to Trump at the end of his term.
Excuse me…. Wasn’t President Rosevelt dead in 1947?
How long will it take to remove all the listening devices?
I have 15 years as a 747 Captain and have flown almost all models. The current VC 25 aircraft are nearing their end of life, parts and maintenance are becoming untenable with such an old aircraft. Reliability is an absolute necessity. The 747-8 (which I have flown) is light years a better aircraft than the 747-200 on which the VC25 is based.
If this is a personal gift to Trump, let him bear all the costs associated with the aircraft. Why spend the people’s tax money to modify the aircraft, then give it to him at the end of his term. The two current aircraft as well as the two that will be delivered shortly, can serve him well. That 747-8 should be ferried to the desert and parked, then when he
finishes his term he can take it.
Thiis aircraft will not be ready for use by Trump in his term as it will take beyond his term to be made useable as an
Air Force One. It may never be made useable as an Air Force One. Just for information, the US Air Force is in the
process of buying five Boeing 747-8i aircraft from Korean Airline. The first one is in Dayton, Ohio aqwaiting
modification possibly as a Dooms Day aircraft.
Exactly the tasteless bling bling that suits Trump…. the preferred design of Russian oligarchs as well.
Let’s cut FEMA, US AID, education and everything else but use as many tax dollars as we can to glorify President Pompous. As I re-read the Left Behind series 25 years later, I am appalled and frightened by the similarities.
Per The Atlantic’s David Frum: “the Trump administration has slowed the flow of weapons to Ukraine, undermined sanctions on Russia, and made empty promises about future action while spending more money upgrading Trump’s private jet than aiding Ukraine’s defense.”
