Philippine Airlines (PAL) made aviation history when its first Airbus A350-1000 aircraft touched down in Manila on the afternoon of December 20, 2025. This makes the Philippine flag carrier the first airline in Southeast Asia and the 10th worldwide to operate the largest variant of Airbus’ long-range widebody aircraft.
The delivery marks a significant step in PAL’s fleet modernization and global expansion strategy, with the airline set to receive eight more A350-1000s as part of its ongoing fleet development program.
Following a handover ceremony in Toulouse, France, PAL Holdings President Lucio Tan III led a delegation of senior executives, including PAL Board Advisor Kyle Tan, PAL President Richard Nuttall, and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Carlos Luis Fernandez, in accepting the aircraft from Airbus, the airline’s partner for over 40 years.
“The arrival of the A350-1000 marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to fleet modernization and network growth,” Tan said. “It will be a source of Filipino pride and a transformational step for our airline.”
The aircraft features a three-class configuration accommodating 382 passengers, with 42 Business Class seats, 24 in Premium Economy, and 316 in Economy. PAL said it plans to deploy the A350-1000 on its transpacific routes, expanding its network to major North American destinations with nonstop service.
Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 turbofan engines, each delivering up to 97,000 pounds of thrust, the aircraft offers enhanced operational efficiency and reliability. The A350-1000 delivers a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft and is capable of operating with sustainable aviation fuel.
The new arrival brings PAL’s total fleet to 82 aircraft and will complement the airline’s existing A350-900s already serving US routes. The addition strengthens PAL’s widebody fleet strategy focused on expanding long-haul capacity while improving passenger experience and operational performance.
The A350 family features advanced aerodynamics, state-of-the-art technology, and lightweight materials. Its Airspace cabin design includes wide seats, high ceilings, and ambient lighting to enhance passenger comfort on long-haul flights.
