A United Airlines Boeing 767 passenger aircraft made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport after suffering an engine failure over the Atlantic. The jet was performing a transatlantic flight between Newark in the United States, and Zurich in Switzerland.
According to flight data found on Flightradar24.com, the incident occurred on March 28, 2022, when a United Airlines Boeing 767-300, registered N675UA, was performing regular daily service UA134 with 123 passengers and crew on board.
At around 3:30 a.m. (UTC) the aircraft took off from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in the US and was scheduled to land at Zurich Airport (ZRH) in Switzerland. However, as the aircraft was flying over the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 570 nautical miles west of Ireland, the flight crew reported an issue with the right-hand engine.
Due to the emergency, the pilots began to drift down to a lower altitude, descending from 37,000 ft (FL370) to 25,000 ft (FL250) and asked for permission to divert to the nearest airport.
At 9:40 a.m. (UTC), around 95 minutes after drifting down from FL370, the Boeing 767-300 made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport (SNN).
The aircraft landed safely and no further incidents were reported.
