AirAsia’s latest headache: online scammers

AirAsia is warning the public not to fall for online scam schemes that use the Malaysian low cost carrier’s brand or involve the company’s CEO Tony Fernandes.

On February 11, 2019, the carrier released a statement urging the public to be “cautious” and, when in doubt, “always refer to AirAsia’s official social media channels”.

The airline did not specify what scam in particular it is referring to, but claimed it will not “hesitate to take legal action against individuals or groups who organise illegal schemes using the AirAsia brand”.

It is the second time the airline is fighting against scam this year alone. In January 2019, it has already refuted claims that the company’s CEO Tony Fernandes is behind a new financial technology platform Crypto Revolt.

Back in 2016, scammers also used Fernandes’ name in a get-rich-quick scheme on social media. At the time, AirAsia had to deny their CEO is behind various “secrets revealed” quotes, such as “They want my HEAD for revealing this secret”.
