Flight compensation company Skycop took Air Baltic to court over unpaid flight compensations which are described under the EU Regulation 261/2004. The company initiated 207 court cases against the airline – and that’s for Lithuania alone. After a long and difficult legal fight, the court supported Skycop requests for compensation. The issue in question concerns around €120 000 in unpaid compensation for 385 passengers. Further litigation is taking place in Poland and Latvia.

“After a fierce battle in court, Skycop and Air Baltic finally settled on a way to finish these cases and to carry out the payment of compensations. A general agreement was reached and Skycop will process payments to the passengers once Air Baltic transfers the money,” said Nerijus Zaleckas, the attorney who represented interests of Skycop and passengers in court.

“Cases like these are causing the attitudes of the airlines to shift. Companies such as Skycop operate under the EU Regulation 261/2004 – and they’re the ones persuading the airlines to comply with the law. Everyone will benefit from this. Further litigation of this kind will only happen in exceptional cases,” elaborated Nerijus.

Skycop claims that the company always seeks to settle out of court first. Lawsuits are filed only if there is no other way to agree peacefully. Skycop will go after each and any unpaid compensation. The company is currently filing 160 lawsuits against a single airline in Poland. Other litigation processes are continuing in Spain or are about to be initiated in Germany. Skycop is currently taking legal action against Air Baltic, Ryanair, Swiss Air Lines, Iberia, Vueling, Enter Air, Smartwings Poland, Ukraine International Airlines and others.
