World Travel Awards (WTA), a global initiative to reward excellence in travel and tourism, announced the winners of its Europe 2020 competition. Having survived a near-death experience during the COVID-19-related downturn in air travel demand, the budget air carrier Norwegian Air (DY) was ranked as the Leading Low-Cost Airline of 2020 for the sixth year in a row.

On November 2, 2020, the struggling Norwegian airline received a dose of positivity after being named the continent’s leader in a Low-Cost airline category. The air carrier gained recognition for its sustainability effort.

WTA named Norwegian being a European leader in sustainable aviation after the air carrier presented its commitment to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 45% by 2030 and removing all non-recyclable plastics as well as recycling all single-use plastics by 2023, in a press release announced by WTA.

It seems that the recognition and the award from WTA shed the budget airline‘s mood of financial despair away for awhile. Jacob Schram, the CEO of Norwegian Air, in a press release dedicated to achievement, said that despite the unprecedented challenges in 2020, Norwegian Air kept its customers „at the heart of our business by continuing to operate key domestic and European routes while delivering our award-winning service.“

„Winning ‘Europe’s Leading Low-Cost Airline’ for a 6th consecutive year is yet a further demonstration of the resilience and dedication of colleagues from across Norwegian who have all shown themselves to be true Resdnose Warriors,” added the CEO.

According to the organizer of the event, the verified professionals of the travel industry worldwide were invited to submit their votes for travel companies that they considered to have shown the best performance in 2020. The voting was running from September 28 until October 25, 2020.
