Antonov An-124 suffers runway excursion after emergency landing
Forced to an emergency landing by an engine failure, a Volga-Dnepr Airlines An-124 cargo plane suffered a runway excursion at Novosibirsk-Tolmachevo Airport (OVB), central Russia.
The Antonov An-124-100 freighter, registered as RA-82042, took off from Novosibirsk-Tolmachevo Airport (OVB) on its way to Wien-Schwechat International Airport (VIE). It was carrying 14 people. "The plane was operating a charter flight from Seoul (South Korea) to Vienna (Austria) with a tech stop in Novosibirsk (Russia) with 84 tons of automotive spare parts," the company reported in a statement.
During takeoff, however, the plane suffered what appeared to be an uncontained failure of the no. 2 engine. The flight crew decided to go around and land back in Novosibirsk. Upon landing in its departing airport, the aircraft suffered a runway excursion and its nose landing gear collapsed.
Pictures that emerged online show the aircraft resting on soft ground. The left side of the fuselage appears to be punctured, most likely by debris from the engine. Part of the engine blades fell through the roof of a nearby hangar. As for the missing engine cowl, it was recovered in a nearby field. No injuries were reported.
