Wizz Air flight unable to take off at Gibraltar after bird strike
During its second ever flight to Gibraltar, Wizz Air flight suffered bird strike, which delayed the return to the UK flight by a day.
Wizz Air flight W6-5147 from London Luton Airport (LTN) to Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) suffered a bird strike upon landing on December 14, 2020. The aircraft, Airbus A320, managed to safely land on Gibraltar’s runway 27.
The aircraft required an overnight inspection and was unable to depart on its return flight. The flight was postponed to December 15, 2020.
“The safety of our passengers, crew and aircraft remains Wizz Air’s top priority,” outlined the airline’s spokesperson to the GBC News.
Wizz Air operated its inaugural flight to Gibraltar on December 11, 2020. The airline scheduled regular twice-weekly flights on Mondays and Fridays.
As Gibraltar is currently on the UK's travel corridors list, the British travelers will not need to quarantine when returning to the UK.
“I’m delighted to welcome a new airline to Gibraltar and to see the resumption of services from Luton for this winter. In these challenging times it is encouraging to see an operator such as Wizz Air UK putting their faith in Gibraltar as a destination,” said the Minister for Business, Tourism, Transport and the Port of Gibraltar Vijay Daryanani.
