The ultra-low-cost airline WizzAir is set to open a new base in Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. The airline has scheduled the new base launch in May 2021.
Having expectations that 2021 would be a “transition year out of the crisis”, Wizz Air announced its plans to open a new base at Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ). The first scheduled flight to Dortmund Airport (DTM) will depart on May 20, 2021.
The Sarajevo International Airport will be the 41 base in the air carrier’s network. According to WizzAir statement, the company plans to deploy a single Airbus A320 aircraft at the new SJJ base.
”After eight years of successful operations to Bosnia and Herzegovina, I am delighted to announce our second Bosnian base in Sarajevo, as we see the potential and the demand for low-cost travel in the country,” Andras Rado, the Senior Corporate Communications Manager of Wizz Air said.
Along with the establishment of a new base, the air carrier is also set to start nine new services to seven countries from Sarajevo starting from May 2021. The bunch of new destinations out of Sarajevo will include flights to Basel (BSL), Brussels (CRL), Copenhagen (CPH), Dortmund (DTM), Eindhoven (EIN), Gothenburg (GOT), London (LTN), Memmingen (FMM) as well as Paris (BVA) airports.
WizzAir pointed out that from May 20, 2021, it will begin three-times-weekly operations to Copenhagen (CPH) and Dortmund (DTM), as well as two-times-weekly flights to Memmingen (FMM). A day later, on May 21, 2021, the air carrier will launch three-times-weekly operations to Basel (BSL) and Brussels (CRL) as well as two-times-weekly flights to London (LTN).
Meanwhile, starting on May 22, 2021, Wizz Air will add the Paris (BVA) route with a frequency of two flights per week. Meanwhile, the last two destinations, Eindhoven (EIN) and Gothenburg (GOT) are set to be operated two times per week starting from May 23, 2021.
Despite a €116 million ($140.5 million) loss in Q3 FY2020, the air carrier continues to focus on digital platform investments, fleet renewal, and network expansion. According to the latest financial report, during Q3 2020, Wizz Air has expanded the network by 14 new bases and allocated a total of 8 Airbus Family aircraft. Meanwhile, the air carrier also launched more than 50 new routes.
